they'll call us revolutionaries

but you're good enough for me

My new love that I discovered all on my own:

Mindy Smith.

Folkish, mellow, voice-wise similar to Sara Watkins but much better. Her voice is clearer and prettier. Music wise she's got some similarities to Allison Krauss. Really great lyrics. So far some of my favorites are "Out Loud," "Edge of Love," "Please Stay," and "Tennessee." She's just really all around great. Very... therapeutic. I don't even mean lyrics wise, I just feel restored when I listen to her music for a little while. She just makes me feel better.

By the way... I discovered today that there's a new Nickel Creek CD: Reasons Why (The Very Best). Here's the tracklist:

The Lighthouse's Tale
Out of the Woods
When in Rome
Helena
Smoothie Song
Somebody More Like You
REasons WHy
Can't COmplain
I Should've Known Better
This Side
Jealous of the Moon
You Don't Have to Move That Mountain (live)
The Fox (live) - with Bach's E Major Partita and Bob Dylan's "Subterranean Homesick Blues" in the middle

AND videos (I guess music videos? haven't looked yet) of:
Reasons Why
When You Come Back Down
Lighthouse's Tale
This Side
Speak
Smoothie Song
When in Rome

So that's pretty cool. I'm glad I've got it, although I think they left of a couple of great ones... I guess the only one I can think of at the moment is Doubting Thomas. That should have DEFINITELY made the cut. Maybe they could have included a few more live ones. Either way, it's a Nickel Creek CD, and I love them, and they're breaking up indefinitely, so I bought it. :)

The Heart of the Matter

This is a really great song most recently (and brilliantly) recorded by india.arie - go listen to it if you can, and here are the (really cool and relevant for many) lyrics:

"The Heart of the Matter"
(written by Don Henley)

I got the call today I didn't wanna hear,
But I knew that it would come.
An old true friend of ours was talkin on the phone,
She said you found someone.
And I thought of all the bad luck,
and all the struggles we went through -
how I lost me,
and you lost you -
What are these voices outside love's open door
that make us throw off our contentment
and beg for something more?

I've been learning to live without you
But I miss you sometimes.
The more I know, the less I understand
All the things I thought I knew, I'm learning again
I've been tryin to get down to the heart of the matter,
but my will gets weak and my thoughts seem to scatter
but I think it's about forgiveness
(forgiveness)
even if you don't love me anymore.

These times are so uncertain, there's a yearning undefined
and people filled with rage.
We all need a little tenderness,
but how can love survive in such a graceless age?

And the trust and self-assurance that lead to happiness
are the very things we kill, I guess.
Pride and competition cannot fill these empty arms
and the world they put between us, you know it doesn't keep us warm

I've been trying to live without you now,
but I miss you, baby
The more I know, the less I understand
and all the things I thought I'd figured out
I have to learn again
I've been trying to get down to the heart of the matter
but my will gets weak and my heart is so shattered
but I think it's about forgiveness
(forgiveness)
even if you don't love me anymore.

There are people in your life who've come and gone,
they've let you down, they've hurt your pride.
You have to put it all behind you,
cause life goes on...
you can't keep carrying that anger, it'll eat you up inside

I've been tryin' to get down to the heart of the matter
but the flesh will get weak, and the ashes will scatter
so I'm thinking about forgiveness
forgiveness
even if you don't love me anymore
